This Mid-Autumn Festival, XINSCHOOL’s learning community gathered for a small cultural celebration—learners of Chinese from different countries, our international teaching team, and visiting exchange students made mooncakes, crafted lanterns, solved riddles, and tried touhu (投壶), the ancient arrow-throwing game. No one was testing vocabulary—just using language live, relaxed, and shared.

A “language lab” without the desks

In everyday classes, students build real skill in a language; it comes alive outside the classroom. The idea was simple—gather around one festival and let people speak whatever they are learning or teaching, whether Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, or English.

There were no exams and no dictation. One learner read a lantern riddle in newly learned Japanese; another explained why a mooncake is called a “moon” cake (月饼); a small group traded autumn stories in English and French. Language stopped being lines on a page and became a tool you could use right then.

Making mooncakes—reunion in your hands

The mooncake station was the favorite. Everyone worked through the steps—kneading the wrapper, wrapping the filling, pressing the mold. Most international students touched a mooncake for the first time, asking why it is round and which filling is sweeter, lotus or red bean.

Lanterns and riddles—hanging culture up

At the lantern table, everyone made a small lantern and wrote a wish or a phrase they had just learned. The riddle game drew the biggest crowd: clues came in traditional Chinese form, but also as playful “language puzzles” in Japanese, Korean, and French. Solve one, and you earned a little star on your lantern.

This fits a habit XINSCHOOL has kept for years—finding regular chances to put language to use, not leave it on paper. Mid-Autumn is simply one of the warmer nodes in that rhythm.

Touhu—even the ancients loved a team game

Touhu is a courteous little game from ancient feasts: toss an arrow into a distant vase, and the more you land, the better. Set up on the floor, it turned into a light-hearted contest. Students who normally sit quietly memorizing grammar got surprisingly competitive, with someone cheering よし (“nice!”) in Japanese from the sidelines.

A touch of old-fashioned team spirit closed the distance between people. Crowded around one vase, laughing together, the work felt a lot less heavy.

Mid-Autumn wishes

As the lanterns were lined up for a group photo, the room exchanged blessings.
